The Shæman in Cyberspace: Dilemmas of Reproduction is a performative text devoted to considerations of philosophical multiplicity. The contours of multiplicity are disclosed in the conjunction of shamanism and cyberspace. Problems of originary reproduction emerge by means of postcolonial, performance studies, and gender theory perspectives, introducing distinct and often new ways of considering the other and the space of impossibility in philosophy. The hyperbolic figure/disfiguration of the shæman in cyberspace helps to maintain a critique of the imperalis of the technological machine. The focus remains on structures and topoi that ensure futurity and work with the tension and difference of the heterogeneous landscape of contemporary theory, involving intercultural and interdisciplinary thinking in new media discourse. Hence, a rhizomatic logic combines the fields of philosophy, comparative literature, cultural studies, performance studies, ethnography, anthropology, art history, and new media theory. In tandem with the dissertation, two art projects, “Half Moon Eyes” and “Addressing Dolls,” have been created with a view to extending the practice of locating spaces of reproduction in artwork as well as contemplating the intercultural potential and pedagogy of art education.
